ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR THE SEVERNE BRAND

After a long period of research and development, a new "Hydro" foil racing board has now been introduced to the Severne board range. This represents another milestone for the Severne brand. With the introduction of the Hydro, a whole new dimension of riders will push the board to its limits on racetracks around the world.

 

WHAT IS "HYDRO"?

The Hydro foil racing board program is designed with inventive technology and computer modeling for scale tipping performance in all foil racing disciplines. Hydro boards will be available starting in June 2022.

 

DESIGNERS' NOTES 

We started from a blank page and focused on stability and aerodynamics. Several designs were designed in 3D and built with a CNC process. We then did comparative tests on the water in many locations with several concepts and tried to find the perfect balance in all conditions for each design. For example, the Hydro 100 had to have a much wider range, so its shape is slightly different from other Hydros.

 

Why does the Hydro look the way it does? 

Without giving away any design secrets, the shape is optimized for stability, low drag, fast takeoff and maximum leverage on the foil. The convexity of the deck promotes a longer laminar airflow over the board and you can really feel it in the wind.

The high volume and length increases mass inertia and stabilizes the board in the air giving you "autopilot" control. The cutouts help reduce the waterline, making takeoffs and touchdowns more efficient.

High rails give the rider more leverage when leaning into the wind, increasing the righting moment and forward thrust. The ultra-low mast track reduces the leverage between the center of effort of the sail and the foil, which increases forward momentum and therefore speed.

 

The complex deck work has two purposes;

1# gives you a 6th sense when gybing so you can always find your balance.

2# Gives you support to pump when you take off in light winds.

 

Are there any key features to highlight?

The key to this design is the balance of all the major aspects of the design, there are many innovations that have been included, and finding a solid balance without compromise is probably the key feature.

For racing, there are always unexpected conditions and scenarios, so you need a board that can perform in both imperfect and incredible conditions.  We also gave the board a huge amount of tuning options, with a long mastrack, 5 x longitudinal footstrap inserts. This allows any rider to fit exactly how they want.

 

What makes the Hydro stand out?

When you ride, you're simply faster.  There's no escaping the laws of physics. Also, the shape of the sail's nose is a striking visual feature when you first see the design.

 

What was the design goal for the Hydro?

Low aerodynamic drag and maximum stability without compromising takeoff.

 

Who is the Hydro designed for?

It was originally designed for top athletes to push their foiling limits and give them the tools to win.

However, to be honest, the stability aspects that make a good race board, also make life easier for everyone in foiling, so freeriders really enjoyed testing the board and were really surprised at how much easier it was for them to make new B.P.'s at speed.
